Miasmah

Finds

Miasmah is a wonderful little label run by musician and graphic artist Erik Skodvin ( also known as musician Svarte Greiner ). While i encourage you to listen to their work and purchase the beautiful items he creates ( all releases are free to listen to here ), this will feature the label’s intricate coverwork.
These albums are treasures when you fall upon them at a record store; they are rare but the feeling when you hold one in your hand is a special one. Intrigue, suspense, enchantment and maybe a bit of fear. Just like when you put the needle on the record. Skodvin’s work is particularly damp and experiments in the dark, knowing exactly where and how to let speckles of light shine through his collages.

Triptychs are a great way to feature art.
Here are some art pieces I pulled together from 20×200.

-
Triptych A) Here’s a somewhat MYSTERIOUS & ROMANTIC theme…
I’d picture this set anywhere in the house really, but mostly in the bedroom.

Arthur’s Seat by Laura Bell

Ferry from Ardrossan Harbor by Laura Bel

Blackford Forest by Laura Bell

-
Triptych B) This one is more on the SWEET & FEMININE side…
I would feature this set in the kitchen/dining area, or better yet, a little girl’s room.

Stay Icy by Martha Rich

Yes Please by Martha Rich

Chocolate Electric by Martha Rich

-
Triptych C) Mixed it up to create an ECLECTIC look…
This set could fit anywhere, but I’d vote for the living or office area.

Apart Typewriter by Todd McLellan

-
Option D) is meant to be separated and featured in three rooms of your choice…
I thought this was hilarious, an easy DIY that will have all of your visitors talking!

Belgian Julie Calbert’s work hovers somewhere between occult mysticism, high fashion and gallery art.
Her pictures are little artifacts you find hidden in the drawer of an old bureau ; raw, real and heavy with pertinence and history.

I had found some interesting “all natural & homemade” facial recipes on the interweb a while back and decided to give them a try last weekend.

Had myself a Spa day while Vince was away (so not to scare him with goop all over my face, but mostly to avoid candid photos of my goopy face).

These recipes rock! They’re cheap and easy to make and they totally help tighten up my pores and even out my skin tone. Check these out:

-
HONEY FACIAL MASK / SCRUB

Ingredients: Honey, milk, extra virgin olive oil.
Portions: 1/4 cup of honey, 1 tbs e.v.o.o., touch of milk (about 1/2 tbs – do not use soy).

This mask is awesome, especially with granulated honey cause then it doubles as a scrub. (Granulated honey is crystallized honey in which some of the glucose content has spontaneously crystallized from solution. Some honeys granulate faster than others, such as raw/unprocessed honey.) If you can get your hands on natural honey, then give it a try once the sugar has started to granulate.

Apply the mixture as a mask with a brush (or your hands, but it’s messy) on your face, avoiding the sensitive skin around the eyes. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then take a hot shower (the steam will help the mask penetrate deeper into the skin) leave it on for another minute or two and then start scrubbing lightly on face and neck and then rinse off under water. Avoid using soap and make it a “makeup free” day to let your skin breathe. If you want to get out of the house be sure to apply sunscreen.

*Useful Tip: wear an old T-shirt cause it’s a little messy and place a towel like a bib around your neck when doing this so to catch whatever droops off.

-
AVOCADO LIGHTENING FACE MASK

Ingredients: 1 lemon (or lemon juice), 1 lime, 1 avocado, 1 cucumber.
Portions: 1/2 avocado (spoon out green flesh & chop), 1/4 lemon (about 3 tbs of juice), 1/4 lime (about 3tbs of juice), 4 to 5 slices of cucumber. Blend.

This mask is so soothing, it treats uneven skin tone and acne scaring. It works better when the avocado is nice and soft so be sure it’s ripe. Blend ingredients together and apply to face (easier with a brush). Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse off with cool water.

-
ROSE WATER FACIAL TONER

Ingredients: 1 lemon, 1 bottle of rose water.
Portions: 1/4 lemon (about 3 tbs of juice), calculate 1 part lemon juice and 3 parts rose water. Stir.

This recipe is my favorite, I use it everyday now! It totally helps tighten pores and even out skin tone. Mix it up and pour in clean & empty bottle for daily use (used hotel shampoo bottles are good). Apply with cotton ball all over face avoiding sensitive skin around the eyes and… voilà!

If you’re feeling adventurous and decide to try them out, let me know if they worked for you in the comment section below.

Josh Barnett’s art and music has followed me all my life. He’s been regarded as somewhat of a legend by my peers in the “tracker scene” as being a genius with the music sequence software we used back then and as a precursor for ” computer art ” ( all his work is created with 3d software ).

I learned a great deal by following his work and progress. From stealing samples off his earlier tracks to understanding the idea of being exclusive ( he only used to release music either by himself or really well established labels or “scene groups” ), i felt like he was running the show.

Add to that a very successfull run on former-web giant Deviantart’s most viewed, commented and appreciated works and i had a major artistic crush.

To me, he paved the way for being an artist; not a musician, or graphic artist, or designer, just a simple artist, being able to express oneself through a variety of mediums, including digital ones.

Here’s some of my favorite illustration work he did.

A true experimentalist, he was creating music in the early 00s that was conceptually and stylistically avant-garde. He turned me to drum&bass, ambient, idm, industrial, dubstep & more way before the mainstream media did.
He recently released his latest full length ” a million drops” which you can download for free on his website, or stream throught soundcloud :

OLYMPIA LE-TAN

Features

Her creativity and style caught my eye as soon as I spotted her collection of embroidered book-clutches. Then I came across “Mourir Auprès De Toi” a short film by the designer, directed by Spike Jonze! You simply must watch.

“Inspired by vibrant and old book covers, Olympia Le-Tan launched her You Cant Judge A Book By Its Cover collection in September 2009. Her love of literature was a passion she shared with her father, French illustrator Pierre Le-Tan, and her talent for embroidery was inherited from her grandmother.”

“Each clutch is handmade in France, lined with beautiful Liberty of London fabric, and limited to only 16 pieces per design. I would love to own any of these incredible book bags – it would look so lovely sitting on my bookshelf when I am not carrying it!”

SPIKE JONZE: MOURIR AUPRÈS DE TOI
The Celebrated Filmmaker and Designer Olympia Le-Tan Co-create a Tale to Pierce the Heart

Designer Olympia Le-Tan’s embroidered clutch-bags spring to life in director Spike Jonze’s tragicomic stop-motion animation Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die By Your Side). On a shelf in famed Parisian bookstore Shakespeare and Company, the star-crossed love story of a klutzy skeleton and his flame-haired amour plays out amidst Le-Tan’s illustrations of iconic first-edition book covers. “It’s such a beautiful and romantic place,” offers Le-Tan of the antiquarian bookstore. “The perfect setting for our story!” The project started after Jonze asked for a Catcher in the Rye embroidery to put on his wall and the plucky Le-Tan asked for a film in return. Enlisting French filmmaker Simon Cahn to co-direct, the team wrote the script between Los Angeles and Paris over a six month period, before working night and day animating the 3,000 pieces of felt Le-Tan had cut by hand. “I love getting performances from, telling stories about and humanizing things that aren’t human,” said Jonze of working with Le-Tan’s characters. After spending five years adapting Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are, Jonze’s recent shorts include robot love story I’m Here and an inspired G.I. Joe-starring video for The Beastie Boys. “A short is like a sketch,” he says. “You can have an idea or a feeling and just go and do it.” Here the iconic director reveals his creative process to writer Maryam L’Ange.
